Did you hear that? That was the sound of January flying past.

Where the heck did it go? I don't know, but I think we got some pretty good things done this month, so I'm happy. Aren't you? January was fun.

I was treated to some bluesy guitar tunes while waiting for the train home yesterday. Wait for his fun little riff about halfway through the video.




It was COLD today! Really really cold. After walking half a block this morning I could feel the inside of my nose start to freeze. It really feels like winter out there! I'm glad our space heater is being put to good use.

And I'm sorry for all the subway posts. And the camera phone posts. What can I say? I work. I commute. I don't lug a large camera around with me on these daily ventures. Maybe I should. Sometimes I'm walking along and I see something and I envision the photo that I would take of it and how great it would look - if I had my camera. (It's just so heavy!)

We like to meet up for lunch around 54th and Park. That's between our offices.
Monday there was a free jazz concert across the street from our usual spot. Sweet!

What could be better than hangin out with your best friend,
in gorgeous weather,
with pb&j's, a banana and sodas,
listening to live music?

National Symphony Orchestra, live at the Capitol:

harmonica blues

Waiting at the 125th street station on my way home last week, my fellow commuters and I were treated to some sweet harmonica tunes:



The best part was that he wasn't a performer playing for money. Just a regular guy who prefers making his own music to zoning out on an iPod. Love it.

The National Symphony Orchestra played a free Labor Day concert on the lawn in front of the Capitol on Sunday night. After a long day on our feet it sounded like the perfect way to end our day.

Right when we got there it started raining and most people left their spots and hid under the trees. We didn't have umbrellas and knew we couldn't avoid getting wet, so we walked right up near the front and got great seats! By the time the rain stopped and the crowd came back, we were completely soaked. It was chilly but fun!

The rain stopped for about an hour and the symphony orchestra played until it started again. It was so cool to hear them play the National Anthem while everyone stood and faced the flag on top of our nation's capitol with our hands over our hearts. Other highlights included when they played a few John Williams songs, including a Star Wars medley.

Then the downpour resumed, the concert was postponed, and we ran back to the hotel! We were chilled and exhausted and crawled into our warm bed very happily. It was such a great evening.

I've mentioned Klane's favorite band is Brand New.

His second favorite band is Third Eye Blind.

On Thursday, they came to DDB and played an acoustic set for a small crowd. They played some new songs and took requests for old favorites.

Klane loves his job.

philharmonic @ the park

The NY Philharmonic does a few free concerts in Central Park during the summer. I think it's so cool that 80,000 New Yorkers crowded onto the Great Lawn to hear Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 played live. What a neat experience to spread out your blanket, hang out on the lawn and enjoy classical music in such a diverse crowd of people.


Unfortunately Klane had to be at scouts and couldn't make it, but I still had lots of good company. I met up early with Kathryn and friends for seat-saving, yummy treats and chatting.


Then a little later I was joined by my cousin Ashley and her brand-new husband Matt, who were passing through town on their way back from a month-long honeymoon trip to Europe. Lots to talk about! It was so fun to catch up.



At the end they had a fireworks show! Love that! I really loved this event; I might have to bring Klane back for round two on Friday night.

brand new in brooklyn

Brand New is Klane's all-time favorite band. He's been a fan since their beginning, and saw them way back in 2002 at a tiny club in Lindon when they were first starting out. When Klane and I met for the first time, we were getting together to exchange music. I remember that night he told me Brand New was his favorite band ever, and he even told me he limited the amount of time he spent listening to them so he'd never overplay their music and get tired of it. (I thought he was so cute.) He gave me an assignment to listen to their music and tell him what I thought. I still remember that was one of the things that propelled our first few conversations with each other. I guess I passed the test, because I love their music too. Brand New holds a special place in my heart. :)

The band started here in New York, on Long Island, so Klane was so excited when he heard they were playing a show here. He magically snagged some tickets to the small venue (something to do with being on their email list), and on Saturday night we took the L train out to Brooklyn for the show. It was awesome! We stood on the mezzanine and had a perfect view. Of course the music was great and they even played some new songs from their soon to be released album. We loved it.

We got rained on walking back to the subway, but it actually felt really nice. Here we are on the train home.

We also loved Bedford Avenue and the quieter atmosphere in Brooklyn and are planning a trip back to wander around the shops out there. Fun!

Listen to John Mayer

We went to see John Mayer last night! The concert was so entertaining! We surprised Klane's dad with tickets for Father's Day, so the whole family went together. We had such a great time and the concert was amazing; John Mayer is such a talented performer and musician. He can play the guitar like nobody's business. He would do these five minute guitar solos mixed in with his songs that were mind-blowing. Plus he can sing just as well live as on his CD, plus he was pretty funny too. It was fun to watch because you can tell that he absolutely loves doing what he does, making music, and he just, i don't know, exudes this joy up on stage. It was very cool. All in all it was a fun night. We're so glad we went!
